Please add my name to the online Twining roster. I pulled three cruises aboard her as a reservist out of
the NRTC in San Jose during the late 1960's. I was a Seaman on my first cruise in '67, and a QM3 in '68 and
again in '69. She was an old lady by the time I met her - half steel and half paint - but still game
enough to survive an odd brew of 10 to 20 year career men.

BRIAN  FREDERICK                                 VNE   (Added 15 AUG 2005)
My name is Brian Frederick.  I was surfing the net recently, when I found your site.  I served on the Twining from late 70 to mid July 71.  At that time the Twining was stationed at Treasure Island and was being used as a reserve trainer.  I was a member of the decommissioning crew.  My rank was RM3 (Radioman 3rd Class).  I had just come back from South East Asia with approx. 1 year left in the Navy, and was placed aboard the Twining.  At the time of the decommissioning, all members of the crew that had 6 months or less to go in the service were given an early out (Discharge).  While I was there, we made 3 voyages, Victoria, British Columbia, Ensenada Mexico and Eureka California.  I don't remember in what order those trips were made.  We made these trips as ambassadors (spit and polish) and gave tours to the civilians at each port.  I would appreciate it if you would include my name on the Twining's roster.
I have included some pictures taken and a list of the entire decommissioning crew.  In the picture of the Operations Division, I'm standing in the front row, second man to the right of the LTJG.  To my right on the picture was my good friend Raul Rodriguez.  Another close friend of mine was Robert Hansen, in the Supply Division.  He and I still communicate and see each other every few years.
Thank you, I have enjoyed the memories.

I served as Weapons Officer from March 1970 and was part of the decommissioning crew.  When I reported aboard, the CO was CDR Don Brainard who was later relieved by CDR Jim (?) Chesky. Both were excellent officers. With a little luck I will be able to dig out my files and supply you with the names and photos of the entire crew, by division, at the time of her decommissioning. Good memories of a great ship that never missed a commitment - and then some. Best regards.

Hello Glenn,

I'm contacting you because I was a crew member of the USS Twining from 1967 to 1969 when she was home ported out of Treasure Island. I checked on board as a STGSN and check off as a STG3. I believe I was one of three sonarmen and two torpedomen in A/S gang. Our Leading Petty Officer was STG2 Jerry Deal however I don't remember the name of the Weapons officer. Although I was on board for only a short time we had many adventures. To tell you a few we chased a Russian AGI down the coast to San Diego, help make a navy movie by rolling  depth charges off the coast of San Francisco, went through a SRA at Hunters Point with USS Kitty Hawk, had short cruises with the reserves for training and also took out the Sea Scouts, and last but not least did burials at sea. I remember that our sister ship was the USS Cowell DD 547 in the same reserve squadron 27. Also we (the USS Twining) was known as the fastest destroyer on the west coast with ability to hit 40 kts for a short period of time. I do have in my procession some 8mm film of the Twining and crew both in  port and underway. I have to find out how to transfer the 8mm film format to digital and on to a CD to send you, assuming you would like something like that to post or put in the archives. For my part I'd like to have a a ships lighter from the Twining. I have a ships plaque from the time I made third class and transfer to Fleet ASW training Command. What I am trying to do is complete my Zippo lighter collection from all the ships I served on and one of the ones I'm missing is a USS Twining lighter. Do you think there might be one available somewhere?  I guess that's about it for now, please contact me for help or information you'd like. Also please add my name to the crew list and I would be interested in a attending the ships reunion in 2008. Personally, I prefer the West Coast like San Diego, Long Beach, Port Hueneme, San Francisco (TI), or Seattle. Just my input.    <>Fair Winds and Following Seas

I was stationed aboard the Twining for a year from 1966 to 1967.  I was in the A Gang. I believe that Captain Decker was the commanding officer of the ship back then. I had a lot freinds that I have lost contact with since then one was a Danny Poush . Hope he is still living and he will put his name on this list. I am from Pa. but for the last seven years I have lived and worked in Kentucky, Bourben capital of the world.

I was on the Reserve Crew of the Twining DD 540 from 1964 until
February 1967, when I started active duty as a member of the Regular
Crew until discharged in Oct. 1968. I went on 3 two week summer cruises
prior to my active duty in 1967. My active duty term of 2 years was reduced
to about 20 months due to early releases going on at that time. I ended up
a GMG2. I have nothing but good memories of that very cool ship.

I served aboard the Twining from 66-67 reserver duty and 67-69 active
duty. I was one of the two cooks during the 66-67 period along with
Morris Wong. Our chief was Carl Liscel and our supply officer was Lt.
Lamonte. Cptn Decker was our skipper with Cptn Brown as reserve skipper. We
took reserve cruises to Vancouver BC & Ensenada Mexico, and San Diego.
During that time we went to Hunters Point drydocks for overhaul and
southern california for underway training. Lots of fond memories of the
training, Treasure Island and the Navy Reserve. It was a great time and a
great crew to serve with.

Ray was ship's yeoman at the time Twining was decommissioned in 1971
July 7, 2003

I had no idea that  Twining was given(sold?)  to the Chinese. I was the last person off the ship when she was decommissioned in Vallejo (1971). She was sitting in a bone yard with a lot of other old ships. She was deemed unsafe for further sea travel.  One of the last crews on her  were all Vietnam returnees except for some reservists. It was a  wild and crazy crew. The  boatswain's mate was called Bobbie Ridder. He had more medals on this chest from Viet Nam than Carter has little liver pills. One of the last places she went to was to Ensenada Mexico. They were afraid to take her to Hawaii. The last XO was  Larry Matson. I had to type up the ships history, no liberty for about a month. When  she was given to the Chinese  I would not have wanted to be on her when she crossed the Pacific. There was a  rumor that she had been hit by a torpedo in WWII.

PS: Ray we have several WW2 vets who I believe can put the torpedo rumor to rest...  Glenn

Hello Glenn,   I don’t know what happened to my name, but I had been shown on the Twining roster before, & have been receiving reunion letters for years.  I was quite active in searching for Twining info in the early 2000’s, & came up w/ contacts in the Taiwanese Navy who sent me pictures of the Kwei-Yang.  She was still afloat in 2003, as far as I know, though looked like had been stripped prior to disposal.  Anyway, I was stationed on the Twining from mid-Sept 67 – May 8, 1970, leaving as MM2, in charge of Fwd engine room.  Earlier In my stay I was in Aft engine room w/ Ron Phelps, Jim Harper, & others.  When I made MM2, I went to fwd engine rm, working w/ Mike Nielsen, Larry Petty, Keith McKnight, Bill Deming, & others.  CDR Donald L. Brainerd was the Captain, & Stanton B. Lamb, the Engineering Officer for most of my stay.  I was a Chief‘s mess cook in early ‘68, working w/ Chiefs Cooper MMC, Crawford BTC, Henderson MMCS, Tracy RMC, & the 8 or 9 other chiefs on board then.  I had been a chef before the Navy, so the chiefs got the goodies.
I have often reviewed the Twining info I can find on internet & other places.  I have an extensive collection of Naval history books, mainly WW2 in the Pacific theatre, & am presently reading some submarine books & “The Ship That Would Not Die”, about USS Laffey, DD-724.
I was also briefly on the Collett DD-730, & Stoddard, DD-566 in 1967, before being transferred to the Twining.  Twining was a reserve trainer in ResDesRon 27 at Treasure Island while I was aboard, & my wife & I lived in Oakland .  Twining sat across from USS Walton DE-361, a reserve DE, then later the Cowell DD-547 replaced the Walton.  I feel fortunate to have left Twining before the decommissioning, as would have been a very sad time.  We put much effort into Twining, & she sparkled under our watch.  In reviewing the Twining crew roster, I didn’t see very many familiar names, but may have forgotten quite a few.  I would be happy to share what memories I have, or get some stirred up.  I played bluegrass & country music while aboard, & am still active w/ that.  I am in a band, Back Burner, & we have a web site at   www.back-burner.net    I have retired from my work w/ City of Everett Utilities after 38 yrs, so have a little more time now.
 Thanks.

THEO W SLATER                                W2   -  1997
Dear sir,
My father Theo William Slater served on the Uss Twinning in  WW11 not the VNE.
Any way my dad got out of the Navy in 1945, in california.  His best buddy and friend Steven Stevenson also served on the USS Twinning.
They met up after the Navy in the late 50's  in Renton Washington, where I was raised.  Steve lived his whole life in Seattle.  Dad and Steve both married women named Doris.
Dad and mom met after the war in California in a cherry orchard, where they fell in love and ended up having and raising 7 children.
Dad passed away in 1997 from Asbestos cancer, Lung cancer. I have a beautiful picture of my dad in his navy uniform that has graced our walls for over 50 years now.
I have some neat pictures of men on The uss Twinning I would love to share with whomever would love to have them.several are men going from one ship to another in a sling. Dad brought home some neat pictures, but he never talked where he served in the navy , would sure put some light on our questions. I don't know if they weren't suppose to tell but Dad never did say very much about that time of his life but he sure loved the Navy.
I also have radio transcripts that Dad brought home with him from the navy.some have some radio messages from General Mcarthur. Also the list of what things cost back then. Sure would be nice to have those prices now.
It sure is nice to know there some others that are still living. Good luck to you in your hunt. Hope I have helped you.

Hello,  I am looking for information regarding my grandfather. He was a crew member on the Twining duriing the Korean War era. Some of the pictures look like he is in there but i can't be sure. If any one has any information regarding i bielieve he was 3rd gunner Donald Wayne Stevens from Oklahoma it would be greatly appreciated. My grandfather died in 1970 before i was born and i would like to know more about his life as a navy man. If nothing else i would like to add his name to the list. LOUIS TETTERTON    FC2                   W2                      (July 1998)
Apr 2008 - My name is Tom Tetterton and I just recently came across the USS Twining web site.  My dad, Louis, served on the USS Twining during World War II.  He went out on the initial "shake down cruise" and served on her through the end of the war. He was a gun range finder and I believe his rank was Fire Controlman Second Class.  I just wanted to let you know that Dad past away in July of 1998.  Dad kept up with serveral of his wartime shipmates and even attended some of the ship reunions in the 1980's and 1990's before his death.  I have a few pictures from Dad's time on the Twining, his dogtags, but the most interesting and meaningful keepsake is a diary he kept from January to September 1945.  It really is a compelling first hand account of the action he saw in those final months of the war, as well as the daily life and activities he experienced aboard ship.

WILLIAM WADE            Sea Cadet      1964-1970
I just “googled” USS Twining because I was a “Sea Cadet” on this ship when it was stationed at Treasure Island between 1964 – 1970.  I was only 14 -18 years old but I was the 3rd weekend  hospital corpsman and gave all you guys your yearly shots.  Chief John Runcie was the reserve Chief corpsman and he just passed away in December at the age of 83.  I went to hospital corpsman school in San Diego in the summer when I was only 14 years old.  I’m now 53 years old but have a lot of fond memories when I was in high school and going to  the Twining every 3rd weekend.  I remember the food was great!  I don’t smoke any more, but I remember buying cigarettes for 90 cents a carton for me and all my friends.  The reserve doctor was Dr. Raisbeck (an orthopedic surgeon).  I would love to hear from anyone that was on the ship when I was there and share some stories.
