Glenn,
It seems fitting to me that the Twining was decomissioned by the ROC navy in the southern Taiwan port of Kaohsiung a place where we spent some considerable time on one or both of the Korean War cruises that I was on (1952-54). I have some great memories of that port.
Have you thought about having a place on the Twining website where those who wish to could post some of their favorite memories, annecdotes etc? Here's one.
One morning at about 0630 in the southern Taiwanese port of Kaohsiung, I saw a sampan leave shore and head for the ship. It was piloted by a lone Tawanese boatman and it took him a long time to pole out to our position far out in the stream. I wondered why he was coming out so early in the morning. As he neared I could see the bilges of his small sampan were covered by a lumpy tarp. He pulled alongside but made no attempt to tie up. The tarp moved slightly. A pair of eyes peeked out. But only for just a moment. Then, the tarp flew back and XXXXX ??????? (I forget his last name) literally vaulted aboard. He glanced cautiously over his shoulder toward the bridge as he deftly clambered out of sight below. Liberty had ended at midnight the night before and as far as I know XXXXX was never caught for being six and half hours AOL.
